Migraine Relief: Chiropractic Care
Migraine Relief: Chiropractic Care at Back2Balance Clinic
Migraine headaches can be debilitating, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. At Back2Balance, we understand the impact of migraines on your life, and we're here to provide you with information and solutions. In fact, our chiropractor, Dr. Douglas St.Martin was previously a chronic migraine sufferer himself.
Understanding Migraines
Migraines are not just ordinary headaches; they are complex neurological events characterized by severe, throbbing head pain, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. While the exact cause of migraines remains a topic of ongoing research, they are believed to involve abnormal brain activity and imbalances in neurotransmitters.
Common Causes of Migraines
Migraines can have various triggers and causes, making them a unique experience for each individual. Common triggers include:
Genetics: A family history of migraines can increase your susceptibility.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially in women but not limited to them, can contribute to migraines. An individual who experiences migraines in a consistent manner that happen to coincide with things like menstruation may be triggered by hormonal levels.
Dietary Factors: Certain foods and beverages, such as caffeine, alcohol, and MSG, can trigger migraines. But even foods that are not highly suspected may be the cause of migraines.
Stress: High-stress levels and tension can be migraine catalysts. Identifying and avoiding personal triggers is crucial for migraine management.
Medical Recommendations
Medical treatments for migraines typically include:
Pain Relief Medications:
While
not necessarily addressing the cause of migraines, over-the-counter
or prescription medications can help alleviate migraine pain.
Preventive Medications:
In some
cases, doctors may prescribe preventive medications to reduce the
frequency and severity of migraines.
Lifestyle Modifications:
Lifestyle changes, like managing stress, getting regular sleep, and
maintaining a consistent diet, can play a significant role in
reducing migraine occurrences. If dietary factors
are suspected to be the cause of migraines, creating a food diary may
help identify which foods are the cause. Start by making a register
of all the foods eaten and when. At the same time, correlate the
timing of migraines with the foods eaten around the same time. Once
a food is suspected, try removing it from the diet and track the
results. A food diary may take some time, but being persistent with
the process can lead to effective solutions. You can download our
free food diary template here.
Relaxation Techniques:
Practices
like biofeedback and relaxation exercises can help manage stress and
decrease the frequency of migraines.
Chiropractic Approach
Chiropractic care offers a holistic and non-invasive approach to migraine relief. Chiropractors focus on the spine and nervous system, as misalignments and tension can contribute to migraine episodes.
At Back2Balance, the strategy always involves proactive application of lifestyle modification like daily home-based movement and exercise routines. For acute relief, the doctor may suggest ice or heat therapy, massage, or even refer to other alternative therapies to assist in recovery. Here's how chiropractic care can help directly:
Chiropractic Benefits for Migraines
Improved Spinal Alignment: Chiropractic adjustments can help correct misaligned vertebrae, reducing pressure on the nervous system and potentially preventing migraines.
Stress Reduction: Chiropractic care may include stress-reduction techniques, helping patients manage stress levels, a common migraine trigger. Chiropractic adjustments also have a stress reducing effect due to improved nerve function and brain stimulation.
Enhanced Nervous System Function: By improving the function of the nervous system, chiropractic adjustments may reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Studies have shown that up to 90% of brain stimulation is influenced by movement of the spine. A spine that moves better provides the brain with what it needs to keep the body working properly.

A note from Dr. Doug
I began having migraines when I was in my first year of chiropractic school at Life University. At the time, I was not aware yet that I was experiencing migraines, but in hindsight it makes perfect sense due to the amount of stress and the lack of sleep due to studying so many hours. My symptoms were the typical migraine combination – an initial visual disturbance like blind spots that sparkled, followed by an incredibly intense headache, light sensitivity, and nausea. Chiropractic adjustments help me immensely, but it was only recently that I discovered how caffeine and sulfites from wine were provoking my migraines. Since I stopped drinking coffee and wine, my migraines have stopped. Chiropractic care is still part of my regular routine, but not as a solution to resolve my migraines. I get adjusted to keep my body in top form for providing my patients with the care they desperately deserve!
Schedule an appointment with me and if I accept your case, I will do whatever I can to get you back to balance again!
